Top 5 Summer Songs to Play at the Beach

August 16, 2014

Summer songs have a unique power. They can bring about fun memories of our youth down at the beach. The '80s and '90s had a few summer songs that have had a lasting influence and continue to get airplay and played by live bands near the beach. It's difficult to narrow down five distinct summer songs. Here are a few popular summertime tunes that are in constant rotation at many seaside locations.

5. Wild Night, John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp's unique cover of a song originally written and performed by Van Morrison is

an energetic, soulful cover and was a huge hit during the summer of 1994. Collaborating with Meshell Ndegeocello, the song reached #3 on the Billboard 100 Chart.

4. Summer of 69, Bryan Adams

A worldwide commercial hit off of his fourth studio album Reckless, Summer of '69 is relatable to musicians struggling to keep a band together when band members priorities change. The lyrics focus on the narrator's "best days of my life" during that summer--keeping the band together and hanging out with a high school sweetheart, but knowing that it won't last forever when the summer ends.

3. Boys of Summer, Don Henley

Released in 1984 and reaching #5 on the Billboard 100, Boys of Summer is another great

beach tune, with the sound of seagulls and a catchy guitar riff. Henley's lyrics allude to a past relationship that ended and a solo narrator questioning his past.

2. Summertime, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

Will Smith had a long time collaboration with DJ Jazzy Jeff and released several albums as a

duo act. Summertime was a huge hit off their fourth studio album Homebase. It exploded onto the Billboard 100 chart in the summer of 1991, eventually reaching #4. heavy radio airplay. It's a great tune to play at summer BBQ's, beach bars, or in a convertible as the lyrics complement many common summer activities.

1. All Night Long, Lionel Richie

With a soulful Caribbean influence, All Night Long is a staple tune played at New

Jersey shore beach bars. It's the kind of song that incites euphoric feelings as you watch the sunset on a beach and dance the night away. I can't think of a better song that captures the mood of summer--sun, surf, drinks, dancing, and relaxation.
